I read a lot of nonfiction about shipwreck, antarctic exploration, and other historical survival situations and it makes some fanfic- especially one particular category of star trek fanfic (i.e. ‘maroon the characters on a hostile wilderness planet for a few weeks/months so they have an Emotional Realization’)- hard to read

…basically what I’m building up to here is would anyone be interested in a resource post about the aspects of historical shipwreck survival that can be translated to sci-fi writing to enhance authenticity?

okay so by popular demand I am writing this thing and I’m having a lot of fun omg

so it’s already 1500 words and I’ve only just finished with introduction, basic setting-development questions, and food & water- I haven’t even started shelter, fire, tools, psychological considerations (and group dynamics), and real-life examples. I’m gratified by how much interest this post has gotten, buuuut this probably won’t be posted tonight as I’d hoped. watch this space, though!

hey so I posted this offer like a year ago, got some interest, started writing, and then was ambushed by grad school and never finished. I just discovered the half-finished article in my google docs, and started working on it again today, so this is an alert to stay tuned, this is still happening, and will likely be huge, because I’m on page eleven already, and there’s still a lot to say.

Good archival research is 10% skill, 10% patience, and 80% not getting distracted by funny stuff like:

-1874 receipt to the Horticultural Society for One Bushel of Artichokes from Lady Young

-1897 Letter to the Mayor of Halifax complaining of a gospel tent erected on the Commons and recently Much in Use.

-Petition to Regulate the Price of Pickled Herring

-Letter of apology to the Honourable Sir Adams Archibald after a man’s dog got loose and caused his Chickens much Distress

-1878 account of a former Prime Minister who got drunk one night and told the Lieutenant Governor’s secretary to “VAMOOSE FROM THIS RANCH.”
