how are we in 2018 with self-driving cars, robots, virtual reality, facial recognition, and smartphones in our pockets that can do basically everything a full-scale computer can, yet embedding an image in a word document without completely destroying the formatting is still beyond us as a society?
it occurs to me that I’ve somehow managed to end up with a thesis project that means I get to go hiking, birdwatching, write about nature, AND draw, all in the name of grad school. I’m having so much fun that I keep having the vague feeling that I’m Getting Away With Something and that I ought to be far more miserable and stressed than I actually am.
ecology is the sexiest academic field
field research with a tree guide from 1979. I’m still not any better at IDing conifers (how do people do it? HOW? they all look the goddamn same), but my deciduous game is still strong despite all the leaves being off the trees.

I can’t believe that two months ago I was worrying over who on earth would want to host my thesis project
because now I’ve got a yes from one site so I’m just trying to let all the various other people and institutions who’ve gotten back to me with interest in meetings down gently while making it clear I’m Still Available For Freelance and it keeps inappropriately reminding me of internet dating
why can I quickly and easily write a six-page article on surviving antarctic/nautical disasters but, despite being due tomorrow, chapter 1 of my thesis is nothing more than a single sentence and a blinking cursor?
