Voting reminder: if you live in a safe blue state, your vote is what keeps it safe. If you live in a safe red state, your vote makes it a little less safe and may force Republicans to divert their resources in the next election. There is no such thing as a vote that doesn’t count.
WHAT THIS MEANS:
- 34 Senate seats are up for election this year.
- All 435 House of Representative seats are up for election this year.
- A total of 469 seats in the US Congress is up for election in November 8, 2016.
- In order to TAKE BACK the chamber, Democrats need to gain 5 seats.
- In order to FLIP the chamber, the Democrats need to gain 30 seats.
- Democrats only have 10 seats to defend while Republicans have 24.
- Confirmation of a new Supreme Court justice requires 60 votes in the Senate.
Should Democrats fail to retake the Senate in 2016, it is unlikely that they will get another opportunity until at least 2020.
It’s incredibly important that we place attention not only to the presidential candidates, but to the Senators and Representatives that are up for election this year.

This is a good reminder to vote in downballot races even if the presidential race isn’t competitive in your state. (It won’t be competitive in mine unless something goes really wrong for the Clinton campaign.) The numbers above are a bit confusing though since they don’t specify which chamber they’re talking about. The 5 seats “to TAKE BACK the chamber” and the “10 seats to defend” refer to the Senate. The Democrats have a good chance of taking back the Senate as long as their incumbents hold serve and Democratic voters turn out in states with Republican incumbents. The 30 seats “to FLIP the chamber” refers to the House. That will be much harder since so many districts are not competitive.

Scientists need your help looking at photos of adorable penguins. Seriously
Guys, this is not a drill. Antarctic scientists need you to study photos of penguins to help them figure out how climate change is affecting these stumpy little flightless birds.
Scientists from the UK have installed a series of 75 cameras near penguin territories in Antarctica and its surrounding islands to figure out what’s happening with local populations. But with each of those cameras taking hourly photos, they simply can’t get through all the adorable images without your help.
“We can’t do this work on our own,” lead researcher Tom Hart from the University of Oxford told the BBC, “and every penguin that people click on and count on the website – that’s all information that tells us what’s happening at each nest, and what’s happening over time.”
The citizen science project is pretty simple – known as PenguinWatch 2.0, all you need to do is log on, look at photos, and identify adult penguins, chicks, and eggs in each image. Each photo requires just a few clicks to identify, and you can chat about your results in the website’s ‘Discuss’ page with other volunteers.
