I am old (well, for Tumblr), but I remember the smog-filled years. I remember seeing orange scum floating in the lake near me and in pretty much every other waterway. I remember Love Canal. I remember not being able to open the windows when we drove through large parts of the city.
While I am often nostalgic, these are not times I remember with any fondness.
The play-within-a-play is replaced by a complete performance of Love’s Labours Lost, the play within that is replaced by a complete performance of Midsummer Night’s Dream, the play within that is replaced by a complete performance of Hamlet, the doors are locked and the cycle of plays-within-plays continues until everyone in the audience and all the performers are dead.
