me standing outside my apartment in the rain w/ my arms spread as the thunder rolls: this is for cathartic reasons. i’m doing a personal cleanse
my neighbors on their porches who’ve politely grown used to this shit by this point out of necessity/due to how frequently it occurs unfortunately: sure

one of my favorite g&s stories is when hms pinafore came out and everyone really liked the “what never” “no never” “what never” “well hardly ever” line so it became a thing people kept saying and it got so widespread that it started popping up in newspapers so one day the head editor from some newspaper got so fed up that he was like “I NEVER WANNA SEE THIS STUPID WHAT NEVER THING AGAIN!!!!!”

and of course someone in the office HAD to get up and say

“what, never?”

and that is how gilbert and sullivan created a meme in 1876

Everyone has that one work of fiction (or author/creator) who was so foundational to your being, or so important to you at a dark time in your life, that you just absolutely cannot bear to hear any criticism of that person/work, no matter how mild or how legitimate.

And that’s fine and totally natural, but reacting to hearing critique of that person/work with hostility and shouting down criticism is not at all fine. That’s why it is so important to know exactly what things you react to that way, and to then avoid any engagement in The Discourse regarding them, no matter how much you want to jump to their defense. It’s not worth it; you won’t change minds or win people over like that, and you’ll just end up upsetting everyone involved, especially yourself, and tainting the thing you love by association.
